Antimicrobial Name: Cefuroxime (Kefurox, Zinacef)
CAS Number: 55268-75-2
Type of Antibiotic: Cephalosporins->Second Generation
Origin: Semi-synthetic
Functional Category: Antibiotic
Molecular Weight: 424.386
Mechanism of Action: Cefuroxime (Kefurox, Zinacef), like the penicillins, is a beta-lactam antibiotic. By binding to specific penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall, it inhibits the third and last stage of bacterial cell wall synthesis. Cell lysis is then mediated by bacterial cell wall autolytic enzymes such as autolysins; it is possible that cefuroxime interferes with an autolysin inhibitor.
Chemical Formula:

C16H16N4O8S

Solubility:

145 mg/L in water as sodium salt

Melting point:

218-225°C

Comments:

Cefuroxime (Kefurox, Zinacef) is a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that has been widely available in the USA as Ceftin since 1977.
