Antimicrobial Name: Bacitracin (Baci-IM)
CAS Number: 1405-87-4
Type of Antibiotic: Polypeptides
Origin: Chemical/Synthetic
Functional Category: Antibiotic
Molecular Weight: 1422.69
Mechanism of Action: Bacitracin (Baci-IM) interferes with the dephosphorylation of the C55-isoprenyl pyrophosphate, a molecule that carries the building-blocks of the peptidoglycan bacterial cell wall outside of the inner membrane. Bacitracin has been claimed to be a protein disulfide isomerase inhibitor in cells, but this is disputed by in vitro studies.
Chemical Formula:

Resistance Genes:

bacA: bacitracin resistance protein BacA

bcrA: ABC transporter system, bacitracin efflux pump.

bcrC: bacitracin resistance protein

Bacitracin (Baci-IM) is a mixture of related cyclic polypeptides produced by organisms of the licheniformis group of Bacillus subtilis var Tracy, isolation of which was first reported in 1945.
